Why Horolux
Reasons to choose a specialist over a generalist.
The differences between a dedicated watch workshop and a general repair counter are not always obvious until something goes wrong. Here is what sets Horolux apart, plainly described.
Back to HomeKey Advantages
Six things we do differently.
Every Service Is Documented
You receive a written intake note with your watch, and a written service report when it is returned. The report is yours to keep as part of the watch's history.
Timing Measured on a Machine
Mechanical movements are tested on a Witschi timing machine in five positions before and after regulation. You see the numbers, not a summary statement.
Ultrasonic Cleaning Used
Components from mechanical movements are cleaned ultrasonically before fresh lubrication is applied. This removes degraded lubricant fully rather than lubricating over it.
Original Parts Kept Where Possible
For vintage work, no original component is removed without discussion. We work around what is there rather than replacing it by default.
Clear Communication Throughout
Services are scoped and agreed before work begins. Changes to scope are discussed before they happen. You are not presented with unexpected additions at collection.
Fixed Pricing by Service Category
Each service has a stated price. RM 480 for quartz, RM 1,850 for mechanical, RM 4,480 for the vintage programme. No surprises when you collect.
In Detail
Each benefit, explained.
Practical Expertise
The workshop is run by a watchmaker who has spent fifteen years working with mechanical movements. This is not a background in consumer electronics or general jewellery repair — it is focused, hands-on experience with the specific mechanisms found in wristwatches.
That specialisation matters for mechanical work. A movement that has been incorrectly lubricated, or regulated without a timing machine, may appear to be running well at first but drift badly within months. Correct technique is not visible to the untrained eye, which is why the written service report exists — it gives you an objective reference point.
- Fifteen years of focused mechanical and quartz work
- Witschi-tested timing, not estimated
- Familiarity with Swiss, Japanese, and German calibres
- Vintage restoration handled conservatively
- Single watchmaker does all bench work — no handoff
Bench Equipment
Good watchmaking depends on having the right measuring instruments. At Horolux, the standard tools for mechanical work include a Witschi timing machine, an ultrasonic cleaning unit, and a pressure tester for case water resistance. These are not optional extras — they are how the work is done.
The Witschi machine produces a printout showing beat error, amplitude, and rate in each position. This is included with your service report as a record of the movement's condition before and after work.
- Witschi timing machine — five positions measured
- Ultrasonic bath for component cleaning
- Pressure tester for water resistance
- Photographic documentation for vintage intake
- Written reports kept on file for reference
Service Communication
We do not assume that watch owners want minimal information. The people who bring their watches to Horolux are typically attentive owners — they notice when a watch runs fast, or gains three seconds a day, or lost time after a knock. They respond well to clear information rather than vague reassurances.
The intake note, the service report, the written restoration plan — these are all forms of communication. They are written to be read by the watch owner, not filed away by the workshop.
- Pre-service scope agreed in writing
- Intake note provided at drop-off
- Status update available on request
- No work proceeds without owner agreement
- Walk-in visits welcome for quartz services
Value and Pricing
The Horolux services are priced to reflect the work involved. A full mechanical service — disassembly, ultrasonic cleaning, lubrication to specification, Witschi testing, regulation, water-resistance check — takes several hours of careful bench time. The RM 1,850 price reflects that honestly.
Prices are fixed by service category, not calculated per-movement or adjusted after intake. What is quoted is what you pay, unless an additional finding is discovered and discussed before work begins.
- Battery & Quartz — RM 480
- Mechanical Service — RM 1,850
- Vintage Programme — RM 4,480
- No hidden additions after intake
- All pricing in Malaysian Ringgit
Comparison
Specialist workshop vs general repair service.
The differences are not about price. They are about what happens on the bench, and what information you receive when the watch is returned.
Typical Repair Counter
- Timing checked by feel or basic instrument, not recorded
- No written intake note — watch enters the system informally
- Components rinsed, not ultrasonically cleaned
- Vintage parts replaced as a matter of course
- Price may rise after the watch is already on the bench
- No service report — verbal summary only
Horolux Workshop
- Witschi timing — five positions, results in writing
- Intake note provided at drop-off, kept on file
- Ultrasonic cleaning before lubrication
- Original vintage parts retained, changes discussed first
- Fixed pricing — quoted before work, not after
- Written service report returned with the watch
What Sets Us Apart
Three things you will not find at most workshops.
A Staged Vintage Programme
The Vintage Restoration Programme is structured across multiple visits with review points at each stage. You are not committed to the full programme until you have seen the inspection note and approved the plan. No other workshop in the area structures vintage work this way.
Timing Data Returned With the Watch
The Witschi printout is not kept on file — it is given to you. You can take it to any other watchmaker in future and show them exactly how the movement was running when it left our bench. This is an objective record, not a summary.
The Original Battery, Returned on Request
For quartz battery services, we return the original battery to you if requested. This is a small detail but a meaningful one: it means you can confirm the replacement was actually done, and keeps a record of what was installed.
